Customer Rating: Summary: An honest, eye-opening travel memoir Comment: Actually this book probably shouldn't be considered a "travel" memoir per se: the author stayed in one place, the Gambia, throughout. I have never been there, but I was living in neighboring Mali when I read the book. I found his insights into his situation and the people around him very evocative. Mostly I was impressed with his honesty in describing his own thoughts and feelings, his enchantment with certain experiences, his infatuation with women.... It all rang very true, and although this is no free-ranging travelogue presenting an overview of the country, I'd recommend it to readers interested in Africa generally and the Gambia particularly.
